Brief overview of the film
Skateistan: Four Wheels and a Board is an independent, English subtitled documentary directed by Kai Sehr. It tells the powerful story of several Aussie activists who travel to the war torn country of Afghanistan. Once in Kabul the Aussie Activists introduce skateboarding to the young Afghan children who take to the sport and begin congregating at a local fountain to street skate. After spending some time skateboarding daily at the fountain, a bond forms among the children that extends beyond social class and gender. Female skateboarders will find the film particularly moving because the number of sports Afghan women can participate in is severely limited. Thus, the opportunity to skateboard affected the Afghan girls in the documentary in more ways than it affected the boys. After witnessing the transformative power skateboarding had over the everyday lives of the children, the activists then try to convince the local authorities and adults to create a permanent indoor skatepark.
